Arctic & Northern Culture

Guide: Murray Lundberg

A note from Murray:

Back in 1996, there was very little accurate information online about my home region, Canada's Yukon Territory. I was just finishing writing my first local history book, and while looking for ways to put some of my research online, discovered a company with a dream - a dream to turn people's passion about a subject into a human-powered search engine. It looked perfect, and I applied to join.

I started as a Guide with what was then known as The Mining Company in April 1997, with a site devoted to Yukon & Alaska History. in July 1998, my mandate was greatly expanded to cover the entire circumpolar North, and the site name was changed to Arctic/Northern Culture. Then in September 1999 I joined the new Canadian division of what had become About.com, opening a second site, Canada Far North, focussing on the three territories - Nunavut, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory.

Canada Far North only lasted a year - running two sites was too demanding, and I consolidated the material I had gathered into the Arctic/Northern Culture site. Visitors to the Arctic/Northern Culture site were primarily interested in one of two things - research material for school projects or travel information. In the spring of 2001, changing attitudes at About.com led to me moving all of my material onto my own sites in order to serve my readers' needs better.

Hundreds of Guides have left over the years (over 300 in September 2001 alone), but for many, the dream of sharing their passion with people has remained. In my case, sharing information about Yukon and Alaska History, the Circumpolar North and Northern Breed Dogs is my chosen career, and the fully-interactive Web sites below are now run from a little cabin overlooking a glacial lake in the Yukon.
