The Sleeman tradition of brewing quality, premium beer dates back to 1834 when John Sleeman established the Sleeman Brewing and Malting Company in Guelph, Ontario. But just on the cusp of its centennial, Sleeman ceased operations in 1933. Five decades later, in 1988, John W. Sleeman, great-great-grandson of the original brewmaster, reopened the brewery using old John's original recipe for Sleeman's Cream Ale. The rest, as they say, is history.
Sleeman Breweries is now one of the fastest growing premium beer manufacturers on the continent with five breweries across Canada. Each has its own distinct regional flavour as well as turning out the Sleeman product. These include the Okanagan Spring Brewery in B.C., the Shaftebury Brewery in Alberta, Upper Canada Brewing Company in Ontario, La Brasserie Seigneuriale in Quebec and the Maritime Beer Company in Nova Scotia.
In 1999, the company purchased the rights to the Stroh line of beers from the U.S. These include Old Milwaukee, Canada's most popular imported beer, as well as Colt 45 and Rainier. The Stroh brands are strong contenders in the budget beer category, so the company now has a solid presence in both premium and budget beer, the two fastest growing beer markets.
In April 2001, the company announced an agreement with South African Breweries to represent their Pilsner Urquell brand in Canada. This beer originated in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia in 1842. The brand name means, literally, "the source of Pilsner". South African Breweries is the fastest growing brewer in the world today.
