Brookfield Properties is a major North American commercial real estate company. It's been around since the 1920s but only got into real estate in the 60s and commercial properties in the 90s. The idea was to capitalize on the demand for office space by acquiring or developing properties in growing high demand cities. The primary focus is Toronto, New York and Boston, but the company also has properties in Calgary, Denver, Vancouver and Minneapolis.
Among other things, Brookfield acquired the real estate portfolios of BCE Inc., Olympia & York, and Gentra.
The company also operates an office management business and continues to own a residential development business which now makes up only 8% of the company's business compared to 60% in 1990.
Brookfield's commercial real estate portfolio includes such major buildings as the World Financial Center in New York, BCE Place in Toronto, the Petro-Canada Centre in Calgary, Royal Centre in Vancouver, and the City Centre in Minneapolis.
48% of Brookfield Properties is owned by Brascan Corporation.
