Biovail Corporation has carved out an interesting niche for itself by specializing in oral controlled release technologies for medications. The company uses its patented technologies to create generic versions of drugs whose patents have expired or it buys the rights to medications whose patents are about to expire and modifies them to qualify for new patents. Biovail has over twenty products on the market in Canada, the U.S. and fifty-five other countries.

Biovail also does contract research for other drug companies with two clinics in Toronto housing 230 beds. Biovail's state-of-the-art technology has been used to do research on dozens of drugs, including the AIDS drug Acyclovir.

Because of its work on modifying existing drugs, the company has been involved in a number of lawsuits, both as plaintiff and defendant. It has prevailed in such actions so far, but the stock price has been known to fluctuate with news from the courts.

The second quarter to June 30, 2001 showed strong revenue and earnings growth due to solid sales of its Cardizem line of heart drug, which it acquired in January 2000. New and improved versions are in the pipe as well. Four other drugs are being developed for release in 2003.
