First Quantum is a fast growing metals exploration and mining company with primary interests in the African country of Zambia. It owns 100% of Bwana Mkubwa copper mine and suphuric acid plant, as well as a 44% interest in two other copper and cobalt mines and refineries. On May 17, 2001, the company announced the signing of a letter of intent to acquire Phelps Dodge's 80% interest in the Kansanshi Copper-Gold Deposit, also in Zambia.
Although the company's revenues come from copper, cobalt and sulphuric acid sales, First Quantum also owns a 95% interest in the Connemara Gold Mine in Zimbabwe, but operations were suspended in August 2000 due to economic instability in that country.
The company's revenues have risen steadily year over year and copper production is expected to grow 80% in 2001.
