An excerpt from my book
The 50 Best Science & Technology Stocks for Canadians:

Founded in 1976 by Serge Godin and Andrι Imbeau, CGI Group Inc. started as a modest Quebec City consulting firm with six employees and revenues of $138,000. From there it has grown to become an information technology powerhouse.

By 1979 it hit $1 million in revenues. Strategic acquisitions and internal growth expanded its geographic reach as well as its expertise. By 1993 it was the 14th largest IT outsourcing company in North America. The following year CGI became the first IT services company in North America to get its ISO 9001 Certification for its Project Management Framework.

More acquisitions have given it a global presence with project offices across Canada as well as in the United States, the U.K. and twenty other countries worldwide. It is now the fifth largest information technology services provider in North America with 10,000 employees and annual revenues of $1,436,000,000 in 2000. It is the largest in Canada.

The company offers complete end-to-end IT services and business solutions with a focus on large-scale multi-year renewable contracts. Its order backlog stands at $8.2 billion.

The company was recognized as Services Provider of the Year by Microsoft in 2000. (End of excerpt - book is available from Chapters-Indigo and at better bookstores across Canada.)

My book gives the company a 15 star rating, the highest possible, based on its revenue, earnings and share price growth history.  It goes on to discuss some of the opportunities and challenges facing the company.

As I note there, CGI Group soared to $32 in January 2000, partially on the general tech stock boom, but also because of the company's surging business doing Y2K remediation. The post-Y2K letdown saw the stock drop to $6. Now the company has found its footing again and is resuming its historical growth pattern.

The quarter to June 30th saw earnings per share double from $0.04 to $0.08. The quarter to  Sept. 30th was even more impressive with earnings up six-fold from $0.01 to $0.06.  And in spite of the sagging economy, year over year revenues to Sept. 30th are up 9.8%

The company continues to make strategic acquisitions and is profiting from the increasing trend to outsourcing.

Disclosure: I bought some for my own account on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2001.
