Image Power is a leading developer of
image compression technologies. Through an alliance with
the University of British Columbia and Dr. Faouzi
Kossentini Professor of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, Image Power has been developing a new
compression technology - JPEG2000 - which is three to
eight times more powerful than existing standards. The codec was delivered to the company by UBC on Feb. 10, 2000 after three years of development and will be presented to the International Organization for Standardization later this year. Dr Kossentini is also head of the Canadian ISO delegation. The codec uses wavelet technology and beta versions are available for testing on both the Image Power and UBC websites. Image Power is also active in developing JBIG2, a bi-tonal compression technology for faxes that is two to six times better than existing standards. In January the company offered free faxing over the Internet from its FaxPC™ website. This technology won the Internet Telephony Magazine Product of the Year Award for 1999 (in the Services Category). To date the company has been sparse on revenues as it was developing its intellectual property, but if formal approval of the JPEG2000 codec is ratified by the ISO, Image Power has a powerful head start on competitors in developing software and applications to utilize the new standard. On February 14th the company announced a $3 million financing deal to "accelerate the development and marketing of the companys still image compression technologies and products for the desktop, embedded, wireless and Internet markets".
