Serving niche
markets is a profitable enterprise for many companies.
And such may well be the case with Medcomsoft.com Inc.. Founded in 1994 by Dr Sami Aita to develop "new technology to service the emerging demand for multi-disciplinary, wide-area healthcare networks," the company went public in August 1998. Its first product was MedWorks™, a Windows NT based software package that provided data organization for physicians, either as sole proprietors or as part of a group operating a clinic. The software includes clinical records keeping, accounting and administrative functionality. Its most recent product is DBGlue™, a specialized product designed as a "generic engine to ensure the reusability of the developed code". This allows the company to rapidly deploy new applications and integrate them with other Microsoft tools. With the integration of Web-based functionality, Medcomsoft has effectively created the foundations for a Virtual Healthcare Information Network. The company sold its MedWorks software to over 400 health care providers in the last nine months of 1999 including the Toronto General Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital (also in Toronto). Then on Jan. 6, 2000, it announced its first U.S. sale to Kaleida Health, the largest health care network in western New York state and 39th largest in the U.S.. It will be supplying physicians in Kaleida's Geriatric department with MedcomSoft's advanced and web enabled electronic medical record system, EPMR2000™. Following up on this success, the company appointed a Sales Management Team for its U.S. subsidiary on Jan.24th. Although the market is competitive with such large players as Healtheon, McKesson and Shared Medical Systems Corporation, the company has taken an aggressive stance on R&D and recent new financing as well as its entry into the U.S. market could spell continued success for the company.
