McGraw-Hill Ryerson is Canada's leading publisher of school textbooks. Its history is a long and distinguished one going back to 1829 with the founding of the Methodist Book and Publishing Company by Egerton Ryerson.   90 years later the Methodist Book Company adopted its founder's name  to become Ryerson Press.

McGraw-Hill was founded in the United States in 1909 where it became a leading textbook manufacturer. In 1944 it bought Embassy Book Company of Toronto to become a franchised distributor of its books. In 1970 the company bought Ryerson Press and two years later the name was changed to McGraw-Hill Ryerson as it went public. It is the only publicly traded publisher in Canada.

The company moved to new quarters in Whitby, Ontario in 1991 where it operates one of the most sophisticated fully computerized book warehouses in Canada.

Expansion into other fields besides textbooks saw profits climbing steadily since 1993 with earnings up 260.6% in the latter half of the 90s. Revenues in the trade, professional and medical division climbed 96% in the three months to June 30th, 2001.

The company is virtually debt-free and was recommended as a value-seekers buy in the September 2001 issue of Pat McKeough's Stock Pickers Digest.
