| For 25
years, Kanata, Ontario based MOSAID Technologies has been
a leader in memory chip design and testing. Its semi-conductor division focuses on the design of high-performance memory-intensive chips for networking functions such as IP Routing and Switching, Packet Classification as well as VPN and Encryption/Security. The company's DRAM chip design is widely used and has been licensed by Fujitsu, NEC , Toshiba and Hitachi. Manufacturers have been using MOSAID technology without licensing for some time, but these deals help solidify the company's intellectual property rights and mitigate future infringement. The deals were brokered by the Consortium for Technology Licensing, Ltd., a company specializing in securing intellectual property right protection and recognition. Negotiations are underway with eight other manufacturers that use MOSAID's technology to license it and pay royalties. Senior Vice President Dan Mathers says "We believe it is impractical for anyone to design a competitive embedded or commodity DRAM without using MOSAIDs intellectual property." The deals concluded and the deals pending could increase MOSAID's revenues significantly. California's Rambus Inc. has been pursuing similar licensing deals for use of its synchronous memory interface, the chip-to-chip connection between DRAM and other components. Its market cap has since soared to over $10 billion. Meanwhile, MOSAID's market cap is only $300 million. And it is the core technology, not just an interface, that MOSAID is licensing. "If people are thinking that Rambus is worth $10 billion and Mosaid is worth just $300 million, then there is lots of room for upward movement," says Brian Piccioni, a BMO Nesbitt Burns senior technology analyst. For the fiscal year ended April 28, 2000, MOSAID's revenues increased 111% to $48,109,000 from the previous year. Fourth quarter revenues were up 91% over the previous year. Quarterly earnings per share were $0.06 compared to a loss of $0.46 for the same quarter the year before. MOSAID is headquartered in Kanata, Ontario with regional facilities in Austin, Texas; Santa Clara, California; Milton Keynes, England; Newcastle, England; and Tokyo, Japan.
