Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin is one of the world's leading engineering and construction firms with offices across Canada and in 30 countries. It operates in 13 areas of development that include agri-business, aluminum, petro-chemicals, defence, environment, infrastructure, mass transit, mining, biotechnology, power, pulp & Paper and telecommunications.

For 2000, the company took in over one billion, 740 million dollars, of which 41% came from outside Canada. The company has almost four billion dollars worth of backlog.

The company's earnings had been declining for several years owing to losses connected with the Highway 407 toll road project in Ontario. But increasing revenues have contributed to declining losses associated with the highway and it should eventually turn profitable. The quarter to Dec. 31, 2000 showed a turnaround in declining earnings with a 50.3% increase. Revenues for the year were up 37% and the substantial backlog promises further progress down the road.
