Toromont Industries is a multi-faceted company operating through two divisions - the Equipment Group and the Refrigeration Group. Through its equipment division, the company is the exclusive representative for Caterpillar Inc. in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador. Caterpillar is one of the leading manufacturers of heavy industrial equipment such as tractors, bulldozers, cranes, earth-moving equipment and so on - over 300 products altogether. Toromont sells, rents and services the Caterpillar line.
The company also is a leading heavy equipment rental agent through its subsidiary, Battlefield Equipment Rentals.
And the Equipment Group also includes Toromont Energy, which has designed and built over 50 high efficiency electricity generating power plants for industry in the last fifteen years. It's a nice fit with the Caterpillar franchise as Caterpillar is a leading manufacturer of reciprocating generator sets and Solar combustion turbines. Toromont owns and operates most of these plants for its customers. The company should benefit from increasing deregulation of electricity production.
The three subsidiaries in the Refrigeration Group supply refrigeration equipment to supermarkets, dairies, breweries, sports arenas and even the gas, oil and petrochemical industry. Its Cimco subsidiary is the "Preferred Ice Rink Equipment Supplier" to the National Hockey League and installed all of the ice surfaces used in the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary.
The company was recommended by ace stock picker Pat McKeough in the May 2001 issue of Stock Pickers Digest as a "value-seekers buy".
