The name of the
game is convergence - the merging of the technologies of
conventional broadcasting and the Internet. The problem
is compression - making signals compact enough to be
transferred at speeds allowing full screen, full motion
video. One of the companies working on this problem is Mystic, Connecticut based USA Video which also has offices in Vancouver, B.C. USA Video has developed Store and Forward Video-On-Demand systems and Wavelet compression technology for full motion video. It has also developed editing suites for its technology and develops full-motion content for advertisers. Its subsidiary, Merging Rivers Media, was the first ever Internet-TV ad agency. USA Video refined the Wavelet technology originally developed by the U.S. military to its present state. It now allows 7000:1 compression and is considered superior to rival products as it enables full motion, full screen video. USA Video was contracted to provide Video-On-Demand for Metronet, now part of AT&T Canada in 1997. In 1999 it garnered attention when it was chosen to webcast the L.A. Music Awards live on the Internet. On January 18, 2000 the company announced an agreement with Urbana.ca Enterprises and Eagle Wireless for Eagle Wireless to produce the world's first Linux-Wavelet set-top box by the Spring of 2000. On January 20, 2000 the company concluded an agreement with Inetcable.com to be a technology partner in a major demonstration at the North American Broadcasters Association (NABA) at its Annual General Meeting convention February 24 and 25 at DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida. The stock has soared on the news. If Wavelet technology is made an official standard in 2000 as some are expecting, the company could pull into the major leagues with rivals like Real Networks. 40% of the stock is held by management and insiders.
