The Top Ten List: Part 1

Dateline: 10/05/98
Revised: 10/24/99

This article was originally written as one page comprising a Top Ten List of Gold, Precious Metals and Mining sites on the Net and a humorous list - Ten Ways to Tell if You're a Gold Bug. I've split it into two with this revision. I've also changed one of my picks.

And so I present my top ten gold, precious metals and mining sites.

The Top Ten Gold, Precious Metals & Mining Sites

1. Canaccord Capital Corporation - this Canadian brokerage company offers a free daily emailed newsletter containing superb analyses and recommendations of specific stocks, most of them in mining and exploration.
2. Gold Eagle - this site is chock full of analysis and information on gold. Their orientation is decidedly ideological, with a definite hard money outlook.
3. Gold Mining Outlook - Steven Jon Kaplan updates daily this very thorough look at gold markets. It includes lease rates, traders' commitments, world wide interest rates, insider trades, and much more. A must-read for goldbugs. The daily updates are in bold face type. This and Gold Eagle are the only American sites on the list.
4. InfoMine - site features mining news releases, newsletters, forums and more - much of it free, some on a subscription basis. A complete resource for both investor and industry insiders.
5. Kitco Minerals & Metals Inc. - this Montreal based company is a refiner and processor supplying the jewelry and dentistry industries. It is also the most comprehensive source for precious metals pricing and statistics both current and historical. Site includes the most popular precious metals discussion forums.
6. The Northern Miner - The Northern Miner is the world's leading newspaper devoted to the mining industry. Although much of the site is available only by subscription, leading headlines, extensive links to mining companies and a calendar of events are free.
7. The Privateer - a superb newsletter analysing global monetary economics from a hard money, pro-gold perspective. Ex-patriate Canadian (and former roomie) Bill Buckler writes it from somewhere in the wilds of Australia. Uses a lot of technical analysis and takes a cautious approach to investing. Always a good read. Gold pages (and much more) are free. Newsletter is by subscription.
8. The Royal Canadian Mint - the RCM produces gold and silver coins for collectors that are more than slabs of metal. They are truly works of art. Coins are richly illustrated on the site.
9. Stockscape - the best feature of this site is its extensive collection of investment newsletters, most of them dealing in precious metals. Includes the venerable Blanchard Gold Newsletter. Also features newswires, free portfolio tracking, and discussion forums. Some services are by subscription.
10. World Gold Council - the WGC is a non-profit organization of gold producers world wide headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Membership includes Canadian heavyweights like Barrick, Franco-Nevada, Placer Dome and Teck Corporation. Site includes extensive news, analysis and commentary on gold from a global perspective.

So that's the list. Agree? Disagree? Like to see more Top Ten lists? Leave your comments on our Bulletin Board! For more links see my Gold, Precious Metals & Mining Net Links page.

Top Ten Ways to Tell You're a Gold Bug - Your faithful scribe fancies himself a humorist. You be the judge!

The Daily: Have you checked out The Daily? Links to daily Canadian business and investment news and commentary.

Live Chat:Check out our live Chat Room for entertaining and informative live discussion with other investors on your topic of choice. I've designated certain times for certain discussions, but most of the time it is an open free-for-all. You can chat publicly with everyone in the room or privately one-on-one with someone. (You don't have to discuss investing so if you want to have a live chat with your Aunt Matilda in Moose Jaw, that's okay too!)
