Originally published as one page with a serious and a funny Top Ten List, I have split the article in two for the convenience of my readers.
And so I present my top ten Canadian brokerage sites.
1. Canaccord Capital Corporation
- Canada's largest independent investment firm specializes in
small to mid-cap companies and offers a free daily emailed
newsletter containing superb analyses and recommendations of
specific stocks to clients. Non-clients can get a three month
sample subscription.
2. CIBC
Wood Gundy - CIBC Wood Gundy is the brokerage arm
for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Canada's second
largest bank. Site features extensive economic analyses,
especially on bonds. Their equity reports are available to
clients only.
3. The
Equion Group - Named as one of Canada's 50 Best
Managed Companies in 1997, the Equion Group runs a superb
website. Although a full service broker, the focus here is on
economic analysis and mutual funds. Equion's Daily Commentary is
carried by the Globefund site.
4. E-Trade Canada - Although
clients get access to a wide ranging set of additional features,
this site contains some free stuff as well, including a quote
server, their browser newsletter, and the E-Trade Game
where you can invest in a mock portfolio and win substantial
prizes. Benefits of using E-Trade are well explained.
5. Green Line Investor Services
- The brokerage arm of the Toronto Dominion Bank offers extensive
information including new equity and bond issues (IPOs), reports
on the Green Line family of mutual funds, a report of the week on
a specific stock, reports from various sources including the
Financial Post and S&P and more.
6. Merrill
Lynch Canada - With the acquisition of Midland
Walwyn, Merrill Lynch became one of the top three brokerages in
Canada. The site's economic and equity research reports are
restricted to clients, but there is a free quote server,
information on the Year 2000 problem and of course, a search
engine to help you find the ML representative closest to you.
7. Nesbitt Burns - The
brokerage arm of the Bank of Montreal, Nesbitt Burns features
online quotes, weekly charts of Canadian listed stocks, monthly
benchmark reports, a portfolio tracker, and an introduction to
personal finance, all free. Access to detailed equity research is
restricted to clients.
8. RBC
Dominion Securities - The Royal Bank's brokerage arm
has extensive resources available to non-clients, including
economic reports, an Investor Education Center, and special
reports on topics from the Eurodollar to Y2K. You have to
register to access some areas, but registration is not restricted
to clients.
9. Scotia Capital Markets -
The ScotiaBank's investment services arm provides extensive daily
reports on bonds and money markets. You can also subscribe to a
free daily emailed newsletter called AM News & Views which
features stock profiles and recommendations. Or check out their
online economic reports.
10. Wolverton
Securities - This Vancouver firm specializes in
small to mid-cap companies and venture capital including IPOs.
Unlike most of the other brokerage firms, their stock research
reports are available online without registering or being a
client. Their morning wire reports daily on the Alberta and
Vancouver Exchanges.
