Best of the Net

Today we launch a new feature, our monthly Best of the Net. We will focus on an exceptional new site if there is one, otherwise we'll review one that's been around a while. This month we're proud to launch this feature with a description of the latest endeavor of the The Globe & Mail, their globeinvestor.com site.

If you've used and enjoyed the Globe & Mail's superb GLOBEfund website on mutual funds, you'll love this new one. It does for stocks what GLOBEfund did for funds. It's a prime example of why the Thomson Corporation is not considered to be just another publishing conglomerate. It is also a leading Internet company.

Officially launched on May 25th, globeinvestor.com's homepage features clean lines with menu bars top and left, fifteen minute delayed market stats (20 for U.S.)on the right and news from The Globe & Mail and Reuters occupying center stage. The Reuters dispatches are updated continuously during the day.

You can also select Wire Services in the menu on the left for current news releases from Canada Newswire, Canadian Corporate News and BCE Emergis. And you can search the news as well.

Like most stock sites, it lets you retrieve index reports and stock quotes, but where globeinvestor.com excels is in its in depth company profiles and research tools. The site has data on over 2200 publicly traded Canadian companies and 6500 U.S. companies.

Looking, for example, at the profile on Barrick Gold, we see revenues, earnings, profit/loss, earnings per share, assets, dividends, return on equity and even the number of employees for the last three years. There's the usual info - address, names of executives, stock symbols, and so on plus where the company ranks in the Report on Business Magazine's Top 1000.

Want to compare the company with similar companies? There's links to their profiles on companies in the same field. And there are links to the stock chart, current price report, most recent quarterly data, and archived news as well.

A handy feature is the ability to create a personal stocklist. Then you can get the price reports and recent quarterly data for all the companies on your list with one click.

But the best feature are the search filters. You can filter by financial data, historical prices or intraday prices. For example, if you want to find Canadian companies that have doubled their income and their revenue in the last three years, you'll find 26 companies listed (at this writing). You can narrow the field further by specifying market cap, revenue and income targets and a price to book value ratio. You can do a similar search for American companies or combine both Canadian and American companies.

Historical price information goes back five years and you can filter for companies based on price performance within that and smaller time frames (as short as 1 week). For example, you can search for stocks on the TSE that have doubled in the last year. You can change the time frame, the exchange and the percentages to your liking. In fact, you can search for stocks that meet two different set of criteria simultaneously. And you can narrow the field by industry group. All Canadian exchanges are covered including the Canadian Dealer Network plus it covers the NYSE, NASDAQ and the American stock exchanges as well.

For day traders, the Intraday filter will be of particular interest. Search for the stocks that are on the move and join the action!

There are numerous other features like the daily price history for any stock for the current and previous month, or a listing of the individual stocks making up the TSE and their current prices.

About the only things missing from the site are news releases on American stocks and a portfolio tracker. Both, says the company, are coming soon, the news releases within weeks and the portfolio tracker by fall.

This is a site to savor and explore. You'll discover new little tidbits with every visit. And its my pick for Best of the Net for June!
