Monthly Mutuals Analysis

Sector Funds are Hot!

Dateline: 11/18/99

Last month it was gold that shone. This month it's sectoral funds. If we look at the Top One Month Perfomers as listed at the Vancouver Sun site, we find telecoms, science and tech, e-business, financial services and small caps making up most of the list.

Tops is the Altamira Leisure and Recreation Fund with a one month return of 19.37%. This is a very new fund - only around since July 26th this year - and invests in leisure related companies. (A retiring boomer fund, perhaps?) The top holdings of this non-RRSP eligible fund include Time Warner, AT&T Media Group, Walt Disney, Anheuser-Busch and a couple of agencies.

It was a good month for Altamira as their Science & Technology Fund was second on the list with an 18.77% return.

After doing poorly for an extended period, financial services may be on the road to recovery with 8 funds making the Top 25 for October, including five of AIC's Advantage Funds.

Looking at the Three Month Report, we see a mixed bag of funds with a number of Asian funds holding over on previous strength. But the techs are the strongest.

The improving strength in the stock market is reflected in the doubling of the number of RRSP Perfomers and an increase from 13 to 24 in the number of Power Performers. Fully 11 of them are Super Power performers - mutual funds who have a track record of better than 25% annual average returns for each of the one year, two year, three year and five year periods.

What does a 25% annual average return translate into in meaningful numbers? Well, if we had invested $100,000 in one of these funds five years ago, we would now have over $300,000. Not bad for five years!

The truly amazing numbers in the Vancouver Sun's Top 25 page is the One Year Performance Chart. Fifteen of them have returned an amazing 100% or more. They're about evenly split between technology and Asian equity funds.
