I prepared this article primarily for French speaking readers who may want to get investing information on the Internet in French. But my English speaking readers may find it interesting to explore the many interesting French language websites nevertheless. If your French is poor, I've provided a handy French-English Dictionary of common Internet and investing terms (linked in the box at the upper right). You can also use the translation services of sites like Voilà.

English is, for better or worse, the language of commerce. And it is the predominant language of the world of investing. This is not surprising since the major stock markets reside in the United States.

But for a Quebecer looking for investment information in French, this can be a problem. Fortunately, many Canadian companies maintain bilingual websites. And, there are a number of excellent French only sites as well.

Here at Investing: Canada, I've tried to include links to French versions of websites where they exist. Most of my articles, however, are and will continue to be in English. For links to French only sites, I've included annotations in French.

Here is a short guide to investing resources in French on the Internet.

Le Web Financier

The premier site to visit is Le Web Financier. Owned and operated by Netgraphe, the hugely successful Internet company that also runs such sites as the web portal La Toile du Quebec, Le Web Financier includes all the things you would expect to find at a well-rounded financial site such as daily financial news, delayed stock quotes, a mutual funds section, and a section on fixed income investments.

But it also has a radio program, insider trading news, an IPO of the Week feature, French language translations of Canadian company profiles from Wright Investor Services, and extensive commentaries from Quebec's leading financial analysts. You can join their investment community by participating in live chat or contributing to their online forums.

Le Web Financier is more extensive than many of Canada's top English language financial websites. It's partners include Big Charts, the Fund Library, Zack's, Canada Newswire and North American Quotations.

Netgraphe also operates other websites of interest to investors such such as the employment website Jobboom, the technology news website Multimédium, and the financial directory website Économédia. The latter includes numerous links to other financial websites as well as business news. All are in French.

Ratio Finances

The French language counterpart to Canoe Money is Ratio Finances. Like Le Web Financier, this site contains many excellent features including extensive stock market information, mutual fund coverage, forums, chats, portfolios and more.

Canoe, which stands for Canadian Online Explorer, was bought in 1999 by Quebec-based printing giant Quebecor. The company is not only one of the largest printers in the world, it has also become a media giant with its acquisition of the Sun Newspapers and Canoe. It also owns Nurun (formerly Informission), a leading e-business solutions provider with offices worldwide.

It's not surprising that Canoe, under Quebecor's ownership, has developed such a superb French language website to complement its English presence.

Quicken.ca

Quicken.ca is a fully bilingual financial website with many excellent features. These include such tools as car loan and mortgage finders, the usual stock quotes and mutual fund information, real estate information, a brokerage centre which includes a tool to find a broker near you, and, of course, you can track your portfolio as well. And you'll find news and commentary on Canadian markets in French as well as English.

Finance.net

Finance.net is an extensive financial website based in France. But a handy menu on the left side of the front page lets you focus on specific economic areas of interest such as Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Britain as well as France, the U.S. and Canada.

You can retrieve the current TSE index figures as well as delayed stock quotations, largest gainers, and more.

There are forums, chats and net links as well, though most relate to the Paris Stock Exchange.

Another French financial website is Lokace.com, but its focus is France and while it gives an overview of the U.S. and Japanese markets, it does not cover Canadian markets.

Corporate Information

Corporate Information has over 500 detailed profiles of Canadian companies in French. They also have profiles in French of companies in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland.

Financial News

There are a number of excellent sources for news in French. Le Web Financier, noted above, is one. Others include:

Advice for Investors Canadian Company Headlines

MPL Communications bought Carlson Online late in 1999 and incorporated all its features into their Advice for Investors site. One of those features are the blended headlines from the major business wire services. All press releases from Canada Newswire, BCE Emergis e-News, Canada Corporate NewsNet in both French and English are listed here as they are released.

Le Devoir Economie

You'll find extensive Quebec, Canadian and International financial news in the Economie section of Le Devoir, one of Montreal's leading newspapers.

La Presse Economie

And Montreal's other major French language daily, La Presse, also has an excellent Economie section. The site is maintained in partnership with InfiniT.com, another website from Netgraphe.

InfiniT.com Economie

Quebec web portal InfiniT.com has an extensive Economie section that includes business news from Quebec and the world.

La Journal de Montreal Affaires

The Montreal tabloid La Journal de Montreal maintains a presnece on the Internet in partnership with Canoe. Their Affaires section keeps on top of business news.

These are just some of the many French investing resources on the Internet. You're invited to explore Investing: Canada's extensive collection of Net Links for more. As noted, when there is a French language version of any site, I've included a direct link to it.

This, hopefully, will be the first of several articles serving our French language community in Quebec and throughout Canada.
