Tech Funds Bounce Back in June

After the clobbering the tech sector took in March, April and much of May, some analysts said "bear market". If they're right, then June was an incredible deadcat bounce for the sector. But if they are wrong, we may be in for a sustained resurgence in the sector.

Certainly technology stocks topped the one month performance charts for June in a big way. Of the Top 25 funds listed at The Vancouver Sun website, we find 21 technology funds including 10 biotechnology and health funds, 3 Internet funds, 2 communications funds and 6 technology funds. The other 4 include a momentum fund, a growth fund, an international fund and a venture fund.

Of those last four, all are heavily weighted in tech stocks. Take the Montrusco Bolton TSE 100 Momentum Fund for example. Top holdings: Nortel - 10.6%; Ballard - 10.10%; Cognos - 9.70%; Mitel 9.60%; C-Mac - 9.40%; Descartes - 9.40%; Research in Motion - 9.20%; JDS Uniphase - 9.10%; BCE Emergis - 6.40%; Sierra Wireless - 5.10%. Those ten stocks make up 88.6% of the fund. (But unless you're very well heeled, don't bother with it. You need $150,000 minimum.)

June saw the number of Power Performers grow from 50 to 58 reflecting a strengthening market. 25 of them were Super Power Performers, up from 23 last month. With the exception of three European funds and the two Vistafunds, all showed positive returns for June. Many are now showing positive returns for the last three months. You'll find them linked in the box at the head of this article.
